VERMONT

state motto:" don't even THINK about not throwing that wrapper in the litter barrel"

VERMONT is pretty friendly and easy to travel thru on most of the roads...

Also beer & soda cans are worth a nickel there...
It is illegal to walk on the interstate there but the enforcement is spotty and you'll probably catch a ride before you see a cop - or mebbe even get one from an off-duty one in their personal car.
Also, VERMONT MAKES THE BEST PIZZA - all the pizza in all the Indy Pizza Stores there is GREAT!

And of course Vermont's favorite sons: BEN & JERRY
(I keep waiting for maple syrup flavor - hey, Stewart's shop down in New York did it once, why not B&J?)
Yeah, the (second) Phish is from VT, too (rock band personally I don't dig 'em but a few people do...)
The first fish was the leadsinger of a band from Scotland called Marillion...

THE BIGGEST THING TO HIT VERMONT BESIDES THE GRATEFUL DEAD UP IN HIGHGATE: BREAD & PUPPET. I have never been to it but it is in a town called "Glover" (west of I-91 on State Rt 16).
You gotta love a place where a hiway patrolman at a rock concert on his MOTORCYCLE pulls out MONEY to buy a t-shirt from some freak in the lot :)
This has happened to me TWICE! once at the Grateful Dead show in Highgate & once at the Phish Clifford Ball (VT cops both times! :)

Now would be a good time to mention that Vt cops don't have to wear severe haircuts & they DO do a lot of undercover work. However if you're not the droid their looking for they'll leave you alone...
(A lotta cops in VT go to shows as FANS!) go figure...

Avg crossing time: to Keene, New Hampshire for example (1-2 hrs)
n-s: 3-6 hrs depending on destination
Also there is a ferry to the Plattsburgh, NY side across from Burlington - it runs pretty frequently and is around 3 dollars a reasonable accurate schedule for Lake Champlain.
Ferries can be found at Lake Champlain Ferries.
You can also go up I-89 to Highgate and cut across the bridge to New York for free (takes a li'l longer but there is a little store that sells these totally excellent homemade pies for 5 dollars!) (you'll see it...)

This area is pretty close to Canada so you may be queried by the U.S. Border Patrol
(It helps to be a U.S. citizen here) + a note to our Canadian friends: our guys wear guns and like to use 'em... (BE CAREFUL...not that I would ever advocate bypassing customs or lying to a customs agent ;)
