I've never been there because I thought I couldn't afford the ferry fare (which as it turns out is under $5.00 CDN) and fares are only charged leaving the island so you could get on the island on one side htich across and pay to get back to Nova Scotia at the other side + both ferry terminals are considered part of the transcanada hiway system so you're never off the beaten path.

I don't believe the P.E.I. transcan is a freeway so I don't think you'll have any RCMP problems...
