Philly - New Haven: How to *CHEAP*

So, after the Philly Ratdog show rob had to get to the New Haven gig - he went to the 30th St Amtrak station where he bought a NJ Transit septa combo ticket one way to Newark, NJ for $11.95 (change at Trenton where the newstand charges 10 cents extra on every paper just to be bastards.)
If you wind up leaving a Phila show and you catch the FIRST train because you got stuck in the staion overnite (it's an express) you catch the PATH 2 33st in NYCX ($1.), then WALK 9 blocks north to Grand Central. (Off peak one way tix to New Haven, CT are $11.00)

Total cost: $24.00
Greyhound same trip: $35.00
Amtrak $36.00
(But its 90 minutes faster and no transfers.)
Again I say: this is easier than trying to hitch out o' Phila.

More later, rob!

OH YEAH!

This message is being composed in the MID - Manhattan branch of the NYC library catty corner from the main one w/patience & fortitude standing guard on the avenue...

Guerilla art update: for a few years now plaques quoting '2001 - A Space Oddysey' have been mysteriously showing up melted into the asphalt in Baltimore crosswalks (well NYC has one now at 5th and 40th in the crosswalk between the two libraries).

NEW HAVEN LIBRARY

Well, after rob stopped off at the brand spanking new Burger King on 5th Ave. and 41st St., (draft dr pepper in Manhattan - whoda thunk it) rob went to go catch the 1107 Metro - north only to find out it had been CANCELLED due to a downed power line (at least rob wasn't stuck on the train for 5 hrs like one poor bastard...)

Upside: Metro - north gave us beleagured commuters a free ride to New Haven; meaning rob's gonna hafta go get his ticket refunded as he no longer needs it (they're good for 90 days from date of issue).
Metro - north is way courteous about refunding unused tickets, takes about 5 minutes and ya fill out a short form, and ya get a refund right there (pretty decent for a multi - jurisdictional gov't agency IMHO...)

Anyway, CONCERT LOCATION: PALACE THEATRE NEW HAVEN, CT (right off the downtown green). Transit fare from NYC one - way off-peak: $11:00).
'A' bus $1.00.

The Subway store on the green, btw, piles it HIGHER than any other Subway I've ever been in plus dr pepper (and they gave me double stamps on my sub-club card (never leave home w/out it).

However, Nw Haven is DEFINITELY semi-blighted so be careful walkin' around here at night...

Rob's Last Place of Being:

Saw 'Ratdog' at the capitol BALLROOM in DC (NAVY YARD - green line station fare $1.10 to $3.10, depending on point of entry).
Rob would also like to thank Chuck from DC, for his hospitality and particularly and especially the 'double miracle' ticket that enabled rob to catch the MARC train to Perryville, MD at 12:30 ($8.25) and got rob here to the Philadelphia free library (21st & Vine) where rob is writing this using LYNX and will go to the 'Ratdog' concert at the Electric Factory (near the market east commute rail station and the 8th st blue line subway/el...)

Not to mention the STUNNING view afforded rob at the Politics and Prose Bookstore / Cafe...
The ballroom has 6 or 7 fastfood joints and a 7 -11 around so...
Note: Chuck and I got out of the concert w/only 8 minutes to spare for the Metro so if you go to a show here watch the clock.
Chuck sez the neighborhood's kinda iffy overnight...(I don't think I've *EVER* seen a church w/razor wire around it's courtyard before...)

From market east, rob will be able to take a commuter train to TRENTON, NJ (50) where he can change for NJ transit to NYC (7-9) and then catch a metro north to New Haven, CT (14?) for tomorrow's Ratdog show...

Note: the Electric Factory is in kind of a dead neighborhood so pack a lunch...
