MARYLAND

State Motto: 'got crabs'?

I couldn't resist that gag folks, sorry.

But I have an idea we are going to virtually hitchike from the N side of the Chesapeake Bay/bridge-tunnel over to Martinsburg W.Va via Ocean City & Salisbury...

START:
US13 in va tidewater area - no problems - friendly people - somewhat impoverished and occasionally inbred but friendly nonetheless...
Turn LEFT at US 50 or go right to Ocean City (a much friendlier and less expensive boardwalk than Va. Beach - and the crabs are the same + they tolerate street vendors better which = $.
Hey, while yer there check out the boardwalk and the beach and of course the chicks!
I'll give you 2 to 1 odds that while you are in O.C. somebody invites you to stay at their pad if they see you over by the sign that says "Sacramento 3500 miles".

When you get to Salisbury you can turn north toward Delmarva and go thru Delaware that way, but I don't recommend it - things get kind of rude aound "Dover".
I personally recommend going into Delaware via DC or Baltimore...

Oh yeah, MARC trains - they only run rush hours M-F but they cover great distances and never cost over $10.00.

MD MTA / MARC homepage statewide - transit link.

If you use MARC, these stations are near interstates:
ROCKVILLE (I-270 DC to Frederick).
MARTINSBURG W.Va (the N-S interstate to Hancock Md and I-70 thru Cumberland (2 mile UPHILL walk from the train station tho)).
PERRYVILLE - 2 mile walk to I-95; good on-ramp for Delaware IF you MAKE a SIGN that say's "Delaware" or "DC" you don't - NOBODY will pick you up @ this exit...
This exit has a Pilot truckstop w/clean showers for $5.00 & mr-pibb.
Hey, nobody's perfect...

A couple more things: REALLY GREAT CONVENIENCE STORE IN MD, western PA, & WV: SHEETZ. Huge *CHEAP* nachos w/the worx! + get this - an unwritten corporate code of giving anyone hitchiking on the road near their store a free small coffe or dr.pepper.
(I guess Mr. Sheetz must have got stuck out hitching on a cold winter nite back in the day...(hooray for Mr SHEETZ! rah! rah! rah!) :)
(Now don't go DEMANDING free coffee, trust me, if they see you shivering by your large backpack long enough they'll bring one out (appalachian hospitality plays a lot in this too y'know...))

And, oh yeah, I-68: along I-68 near a lefthanded on-ramp is a truck stop, (I can't remember its name but the sign has an image of a litlle barefoot boy w/a fishing pole) there are 3 or 4 of these staions.
Showers are only $3.00 in them, and a few yrs ago, when they mistakenly thought I had snuck a vanload of freaks that I didn't know into the showers, they eventually realized I wasn't responsible, and promptly apologized and insisted they buy me lunch...
For the record, even if I would of had to pay for it, the price would have been reasonable and it was EXCELLENT. They are worth patronizing respectfully and of course they serve dr. pepper in the MD store...

This ends our Md chapter.

coolness 100 +1 for the Wash Post being so good
avg travel time - purely hitching 16-25 hrs statewide
w/transit 1/2 that
and yes, freeway illegal, but cops easygoing...
See ya in Mass.
