MANITOBA

Provincial slogan: Wanna donut?

Not much to report about Manitoba except that they don't seem to mind you walking on the hiway.
And you Americans will appreciate that you can get a draft dr.pepper at the 7-11 in Portage La Prairie (a Winnipeg suburb) on the west side of town - it's where the Yelllowhead portion of Hwy 16 starts (for those traveling north to Prince Rupert, Edmonton, the Yukon, Alaska and the N.W Territories.

Also next door to the 7-11 is Robin's Donuts - home of a rather inexpensive lunch (under 3 dollars CDN) and always a high quality...
I BELIEVE if you get dropped off in downtown Winnipeg you can catch a bus across town to the edge of town (the town IS kind of physically large since it's a prairie town and they have room to build)...
I just found out courtesy of an unofficial Winnipeg transit site that Winnipeg transit runs 7 am to midnite 7 days a week (remarkable for a prairie town) - damnn shame midwestern U.S. cities don't do the same...
The page above also links to some other Canadian transit systems nationwide.

Winnipeg transit fares are under 2.00 CDN and transfers are multidirectional ...weekly passes are also available (shudder) - Winnipeg for a week! YIKES!
Local racetrack meets in summer: Assissinoiube Downs (or along those lines...)

Final note:
NOBODY wants to talk about the Jets hockey team...

avg crossing time:
E-W Transcanada Hwy 1: about a day
Hwy 16 (turnoff at Portage La Praire: day and a half
Trucks with more than one trailer are called 'trains' in Canada - and they occassionally pick up hikers...
