CONNECTICUT & DELAWARE & DISTRICT of COLUMBIA combined - you'll see why

State motto:
"Radar detectors illegal"
"What a swamp"
"Duck! Muthafukka's got a gun!"

Beer and soda bottles and cans are worth 5 cents apiece in CT and beer containers only in DE and most stores, if they sell the brand, will cash 'em...
Slap up the easiest way to NYC is Metronorth commuter rail, the most you could pay was $9.50 but it got bumped on 1/1/97 to $14.75 ouch! However, off - peak is now just $11.00
Ilegal to walk on interstate in CT.

How to get from CT to Philly for 1/2 what Amtrak costs:
1. Metro north to NYC $11.00 off - peak.
2. Subway to Penn Station $1.50.
3. NJtransit to 'Trenton' $9.50.
4. Septa train from Trenton to Philly/Wilmington DE $5.00 off - peak.
You just saved 30 dollars and 3 hrs.

Wilmington Amtrak - take #5 bus to "Rodney Square", then out to the "wawa" store - was good but they got rid of the dr.pepper. It's near Delaware park racetrack - there's also an OTB downstairs in Septas suburban station.
The trains go to both Suburban and 30th St. stations in Philly, Suburbans a toilet tho...not to mention less than the tolls.
PS - on I-84 or 87 go ahead and hitch - Metronorth does serve these corridors but rush hour only.

About 2 miles away in the middle of the hiway is a service plaza - (*CAREFULLY*) cross the hiway - watch for cops. Its illegal to be on I-95 in DE but *not* to be at the service plaza. Go inside, have a dr.pepper 'til the heats off then go out to the edge of the truck parking lot.
You should have a ride at least to the DC area inside of 90 minutes. PS - if you get to an exit in Maryland that says Port Deposit / Perryville, in mornings there is commuter rail to DC for around $7.00.
Also, a lot of times Maryland cops will give you pretty long rides if you're helpful and time it right...usually to the Jessup / Columbia area near Merriwether Post Pavillion).

Important Metrorail (DC subway) stops:
Greenbelt (I-95) MD
Landover (I-295) MD, Capitol Center / Usair / arena stop
Vandorn (I-95) Virginia
Vienna (I-64 eastbound) Virginia

Other formerly important stops: Stadium / Armory - RFK Stadium
The one nearest the White House - D.A.R. concert hall
The most you can pay on the DC bus/rail system is $3.50 - I think, and you can get to Merriwether Post from Greenbelt but its kinda complicated - I recommend just hopping the fence and hitching north from there...
MD cops are a little more forgiving...

To take US 50 to Ocean City from DC use the Landover station...there's also some commute bus service to Annapolis but its pricey and inconvenient...
Oh yeah, you'll save 2 bucks and 30 minutes if you take the bus from Greenbelt to Landover stations instead of the subway...
And yes, you can get all the way to Morgantown W.VA. on Marc Rail from DC Union Station for 7 or 8 dollars (rush hour only...)
VA has commuter rail too, but again, overpriced and rush only.
Better to just take the subway to Vienna or Van Dorn...

Really good *cheap* pizza in DC area - JERRY's.
The whole area is really cool I think except for thE f%$#ing humidity!

End - and, oh yeah, DC area 7-11's have those great garbage bars for nachos!
VA cops are definitely not forgiving if you walk on the interstate.

Lastly *Meadows Ampitheatre* is in Hartford near the intersection of I-84 and I-91 about 3 miles north of 84 on 91.
Yes it (Connecticut) esp. Hartford, Bridgeport, and New Haven is a bad neighborhood *WATCH your SHIT*.
I'll elaborate on MD and PA more when I get there...
PS: NYC anti-mugging tip - never look like you're lost..:)

For Connecticut metro north,NYC Transit home page w/maps.

Average crossing time: 6 hrs. on trains, forever otherwise.

UPDATE

GOOD CT ON RAMP FOR NYC TRAVEL: THE VERY FIRST ONE INSIDE CT ON I-95 (truck stop there - make NYC sign - and you'll catch out quick).
Remember (DON"T CROSS THE TAPPAN ZEE BRIDGE COMING FROM CT OR YOU"LL HAVE TO TURN AROUND TO GO BACK TO NYC (found this out the hard way)...00)
