ALABAMA

State motto: "Squeal like a pig, yeeha" or "Heart of Dixie my butt, huhhu."

I really don't have too many especially nice things to say about Alabama as I've only had 2 or 3 really good times there out of 100's of trips.

I will say this much:
The best place in Alabama seems to be Atlanta, Georgia.
I invariably get cruised when traveling thru the eastern suburbs of Birmingham (one even cost me the abitlity to see a ratdog show!).
Unfortunately the cruising spot is also a very good hitching spot (the towns name is "Leeds" - I think).

Good things about Alabama:
Free coca-cola at the rest areas on the state lines (really)!
Anyway kids, it is technically illegal to walk on the interstate there (but I've never seen 'em actually enforce it).

And yes, it is a waste of money and terribly inconvenient to attempt to take the bus across Birmingham - you might as well hitch, you'll get there in the same amount of time...
White trash alert: the only horse racing track I have ever had anybody steal my PROGRAM is Birmingham race course-
(I think it might be 'cuz they allow grayhound racing simultaneously and we all know the kind of people that sport attracts). Tho I have to admit the local paper doesn't suck as much as the Atlanta one...

Most interesting thing that ever happened in Alabama: Grateful Dead show 1995.
Typical crossing time: east - west on I-20: 5-6 hrs.
n - s on i-59: 1-2 days.
e - w on i-10: 4 hrs.
The general coolness factor jumped four points from -2 points to + 2 when they finally got a brewpub - but it's overpriced and in a bad neighborhood...(the name is forgotten, look it up).

PS: if you're from anywhere else on earth you might have to ask people to spell what they just said...they speak "redneckbonics" - I don' mean if you're a yankee. You could be from TEXAS and still have a time deciphering some of the language.
PPS: somewhere on I-20 is a hotel bar named "CHEERS" that looks JUST LIKE THE SET OF THE TV SHOW
PPPS: be prepared to bite your tongue if/when you're ride starts going off on "them nigras" (it makes me sick too, but how much do ya need the ride? It's funny everytime this happens the next ride is driven by an extremely kind black person - go figure...
